Irish budget carrier Ryanair, has been serving Calabria since 2000, when it launched its first base in Lamezia Terme. The airline has now revealed a major expansion plan for the region, including the opening of its second Calabria base in Reggio Calabria and a robust 50% growth, bringing the total number of passengers to 1 million. This growth follows President Occhiuto’s pivotal decision to eliminate the municipal surcharge, which has transformed Calabria into the region with the lowest access costs in Italy.
Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson said “We are pleased to announce a record summer 2025 schedule, which will feature 13 new routes to Calabria (40 in total), increasing frequencies to 14 more destinations and will see Ryanair’s Calabria-based fleet increase to 4 B737 aircraft ($400m total investment) in the region. This schedule represents a significant investment in local tourism and business, supporting over 1,700 local jobs in total and further cementing Ryanair’s long-term commitment to Calabria”
As part of its expansion strategy, Ryanair has introduced new routes across all three airports in Calabria at Crotone, Lamezia Terme, and Reggio Calabria. The airline’s summer 2025 schedule will include a record 40 routes to the region, with 13 of them being new services.
Additionally, frequencies to 14 more destinations will be increased, and Ryanair will add two new aircraft to its Calabria-based fleet, making a $200 million investment. This brings the airline’s fleet in the region to four aircraft, two in Lamezia Terme and two in Reggio Calabri, further supporting over 1,700 local jobs.
