In response to heightened travel demand over the Christmas period, EgyptAir has upgraded its Cairo-Dublin route with the deployment of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. On select dates in December, the airline has replaced the usual Airbus A320neo, which typically services the route, with the larger 309-seat Dreamliner. The 787-9 offers 30 Business class and 279 Economy class seats, to meet route demand.
Flightradar24 data confirms the use of the Boeing 787-9 on December 21 and 12, with two specific aircraft operating the route: SU-GET (msn 38801) and SU-GEV (msn 65087), respectively.
On 20 January 2024, an EgyptAir Boeing 787-9, registered SU-GEV (msn 65087), was forced to divert to Dublin Airport due to a technical issue. On 17 August 2024, another Boeing 787-9, registered SU-GER (msn 33801), also diverted to Dublin, though this time for passenger medical emergency.
EgyptAir has strong ties to Ireland, as eight of its Boeing 787-9 aircraft are leased from AerCap, a Dublin-based aircraft lessor. AerCap is the world’s largest customer of the Boeing 787, with a total of 117 units owned and on order.
