International Airlines Group (IAG) announced it has selected OpenAirlines SkyBreathe fuel-efficiency platform for use at Aer Lingus, Iberia, LEVEL and Vueling, with British Airways to go live by year end, supporting more than 600 aircraft. As geopolitical events add to pressure on fuel prices, even small efficiency gains across a large fleet can help reduce costs.
IAG’s Chief Financial and Sustainability Officer, José Antonio Barrionuevo, said “Fuel is one of the largest costs for our airlines, and ongoing fuel price volatility has reinforced the importance of improving efficiency wherever we can. Having access to deeper operational insight will help identify savings more quickly and reduce unnecessary fuel burn.”
OpenAirlines Founder and CEO, Alexandre Feray said “We are honoured to support IAG as it brings fuel efficiency management onto a single, unified platform with SkyBreathe®. Built for the scale of a group like IAG, our AI-driven platform will help all its airlines align around a common approach and drive measurable efficiency gains. We’re excited to work with IAG and see what we can achieve together.”
The platform analyses a range of data, including flight plans, weather conditions and aircraft performance, to identify potential fuel-saving opportunities and help airlines improve fuel efficiency without compromising safety. IAG’s airlines already operate a range of fuel-efficiency initiatives, including optimising flight plans, reducing the use of auxiliary power units while aircraft are on the ground and using reduced-engine taxiing where operationally appropriate.
