Delta Airlines Boeing 747-400 departs Shannon 

In a brand new factual series RTÉ One will be airing ‘Inside Shannon’ in six 30 minute episodes starting next Thursday 3rd September as part of it’s new autumn schedule featuring 50 new shows.

Shannon Airport is an icon in international aviation, home to the longest runway in Ireland, Europe’s first transatlantic route and the world’s first ever Duty Free, but in recent years have been tough at the airport with a huge decline in passenger numbers as fallout from 2008 global economic crisis.

Now Independent Shannon has a new boss Neil Pakey and he’s making changes.  But with big ideas comes hard work and the staff are faced with the challenge of reviving Shannon’s fortunes while dealing with the day-to-day demands of an international airport.  With unprecedented access, this series, filmed over a year, will give viewers a unique insight into life inside the airport.

Shannon Airport key milestones this summer:

  • In April Shannon hosted World’s largest aircraft the Antonov AN-225 in a scheduled stop for re-fueling and crew rest. 
  • In May at Irish Aviation Industry Awards Shannon won Aviation Sustainability & Environment Award.
  • Shannon hosted AAAE/IAAE North America/Europe Transatlantic Airport Conference “Airports and Tourism Industries Working Together” in Castletroy Park Hotel, Limerick between 29th June-1st July.
  • On Wednesday 1st July Shannon hosted a range of Boeing types on ramp together 737-400, 757-200s, 767-200ER, 777-200ER, 787-8
  • As Boeing 747 aircraft are rare sight at Irish airports during first week of July Shannon handled five Boeing 747s from Atlas Air (-400), Delta Airlines (-400), Kalitta (-200), National (-400).
  • Almost 40,000 people attended Shannon Air Display to mark a key milestone in Irish aviation history – the 70th anniversary of the first commercial transatlantic flight at the airport.
  • It recorded record traffic growth on August Bank-holiday weekend with over 40,000 passengers using the airport up 20% on last year.
