The newly independent Shannon Airport entity announced its first new route with Flybe to launch of a new year-round Glasgow to Shannon route operating three times weekly from 1st May on Wednesday, Friday and Sundays using DHC8-400s which is expected to be particularly popular generating two way two demand with The Gathering and Glasgow’s Irish connection, built around Glasgow Celtic Football Club.

The new route will generate 10,000 additional passengers through Shannon Airport in 2013. The service is a welcome return to Shannon for Flybe , which last operated a very successful route at the airport to Birmingham between 1999 and 2005.

Flybe Director of Marketing Simon Lilley said “Flybe is committed to developing further its route network out of Glasgow. We have every confidence that this additional new service will prove successful in offering an attractive and affordable way for travellers to access this growing business and leisure destination that is widely regarded as the West of Ireland’s premier gateway.

Our new service to Shannon will further complement our already extensive schedule to and from Glasgow Airport that now features a total of nine routes and a total choice of up to 312 flights each week. We look forward to welcoming our first passengers on board in May and would advise people to book early to take advantage of the lowest possible fares. “

Shannon Airport Managing Director Mary Considine said “The Glasgow route was last operated in October 2011 and we are delighted to restore links to once again, not least with a strong marketing programme in place to ensure the service is a success.   This new service now means we have access to Scotland’s two premier destinations, with the Glasgow flights in addition to our existing Edinburgh service.

This is a really good start to the year, coming so soon after Shannon’s independence was delivered on January 1st.  Together with new routes commencing this year to Chicago, Philadelphia and Faro, we are already on a strong growth path for 2013. “
