Minister Varadkar and Minister of State Ring launched a public consultation process for a new tourism policy for Ireland on Wednesday 11th September 2013.
Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar said “Tourism has moved from crisis mode two years ago, firmly into recovery mode now. With the success of The Gathering, a significant increase in overseas visits for three years in a row and a good summer for domestic tourism behind us, we now must ask ourselves, what next? I want this to be the most far-reaching review of Irish tourism policy review in years. 2013 has been a good year for Irish tourism. What I want now is a plan for sustainable growth out to 2020 and beyond.”
For the purposes of consultation, the issues and questions in the consultation document are being presented under headings:
1. Tourism Marketing.
2. Tourism product development.
3. Human resource / training / innovation / enterprise support.
4. Implementation policy and service delivery frameworks.
The Department has prepared a consultation document and is inviting submissions and comments from stakeholders on this paper whom are requested to make their submissions in writing and, where possible, by email to tourismpolicy@dttas.ie.
The closing date for submissions is Friday 1st November.
Tourism is an important driver of economic activity for Ireland. As well as being our longest- standing source of service export earnings, it also directly and indirectly supports employment across the country, both urban and rural. The tourism and hospitality industry employed approximately 185,000 people in 2012 and generated over €5 billion in revenue from home and abroad.
